SUMMER 2012 MAKEUP TRENDS
ATH-ELITE
The first trend of the season centers on putting your best skin forward. Inspired by the hydrated plumpness that you get after a good workout, the look is about a fresh dewy finish. But while you may be tempted to just slather on your favorite base, Senior Makeup Artist for Mac Cosmetics, Nicole Thompson explained that achieving the look calls for more attention, “It is never just about the foundation. If it was just about the foundation, everything would look very flat. So we spend a lot of time prepping the skin, getting the skin glowing from underneath the makeup so you get the most effective, three-dimension face possible.“
Chloe, Doo Ri, Gareth Pugh, Alberta Ferretti and Alexander Wang all had their models walking down the runway with “sporty skin,” which Nicole noted was more about shine rather than shimmer. And while we see our humid weather as a pain, the natural flush we get actually brings us one step closer to achieving this look.
Nicole continued, “With this trend of skin, what we saw a lot of this season was extremely graphic lines paired against the nude-ness of the skin. So it was either a strong brow, classic eyeliner—a straight line or a curved line—there are no soft edges in this trend; it wasn’t blurry.” She suggested veering away from the typical ‘60s liner we’ve all perfected and moving on to more architectural shapes. Altuzarra played with the concept of “Elizabeth Taylor at the gym” with the thickest black brow, Jonathan Saunders kept it pretty with an upward pointing tip and Richard Nicoll got graphic with diagonal rectangles on either corner of the eye.
