In the recent years, the brand Azta Urban Salon has become a brand familiar to many. With branches in most popular malls and in strategically accessible areas, Azta has made a name for itself with its reasonable prices (haircuts start at P200 for women and only P80 for men!), comfortable interiors and great service (customers can opt to sip their signature milk teas while pampering). With their newest branch opening shop in SM San Lazaro, we decided to brave the traffic to see what Azta had in store for us deep within Manila.

REGGIE AQUINO, Associate Beauty Editor

"My hair is annoyingly thick which means more often than not, its annoyingly big. Keeping my hair down usually means setting aside at least an hour to flat-iron and even then, I find my hair poufing up mid-day. Although a rebond would obviously do the trick, I tend to stay away from permanent treatments as there are mornings when I like working with my natural volume. So for my day at Azta, I was in search for a treatment that could magically transform my hair into a sleeker version of itself, without the commitment of forever."

"My stylist suggested I try the L'Oreal Deep Intensive Treatment which was meant to target dry and damaged hair (check! check!). Only spanning an hour (great for those in a rush), it consisted of a creamy liquid brushed onto sections of the hair before wrapping my entire head in saran wrap to help in the process of heating the hair. For the next 20 minutes, I sat under a heater which allowed to solution to soak. A quick rinse and blow-dry followed. I was then instructed not to wash my hair for 24 hours so that the effects would last a bit longer."

"I loved my hair after the treatment! It was so nice and silky and unlike its naturally uncontrollable self. Although it was only really tame for around two to three days, I did notice that my strands felt hydrated and reacted better to heat styling than before. It's a great service to consider for those of you who can spare an hour every two weeks to maintain a healthy, bouncy head of hair."

NIKKI SANTIAGO, Associate Market Editor

"I wanted to get my hair colored. Ever since I started dyeing my hair, I made sure to stay away from tones that are too light. In fact, I had stuck to one color all those years so I was planning to just get the same."

"After I explained what I wanted, the stylist assessed my hair. She suggested other shades and showed me the lookbook to see how the colors would look like. I was iffy but in the end, I went with her suggestion—Davines in Dark Natural Ash Blonde.

She washed my hair, dried it until just damp, and started with coloring. After the color application, she allowed it to set for about 30 minutes. Then, she checked on my strands and after, rinsed my hair. She proceeded with applying neutralizer and let it stay for about 15 minutes. When time was up, she rinsed and dried my hair."

"Right after the procedure, I thought it was very close to the color I had been getting previously so I was fine with it. After I few days, I noticed it lightened a bit (perhaps, due to too much sun exposure) but I actually think it turned out better. I like the shade and I’ll probably have it done again.

Also, the stylist and other staff members of the salon were very accommodating and courteous the whole time. I especially liked it, too, that they offer you drinks where can choose from a good selection. All in all, it was a good salon experience."

JACQUE DE BORJA, Editorial Assitant

"I already had my hair permed a year ago and but my curls were already dying down. I wanted something to touch up my perm so that I wouldn't have to use my curlers every morning (with the regular perm, I had to set my medium-dry hair with foam curlers to really bring out the shape). When I got to Azta, I asked for the Digital Perming Plus, a combination of a digital perm and a conditioning treatment to make my curls softer and more natural looking."

"Before the hair specialist started with the digital perm, she first asked me about all the treatments that I went through before to be able to figure out the current status of my hair. After asking me about my hair, she proceeds to have my hair rinsed with shampoo and conditioner, and then a blow dry. Then they added the moisturizing cream and waited for it to set for about 20 minutes.

Next, they soaked my hair in the solution and then rinsed and dried my hair again. The next step was to set my hair in rollers that were to be attached to the digital perming machine. This step took about 45 minutes to an hour with each roller attached to a wire. This heated up the hair at the right temperature to help set my curls and at the same time to activate the solution.

After disconnecting me from the machine, they applied the neutralizer and then eventually removed the rollers, then rinsed. As for the styling, they applied a curl-enhancing mouse and just scrunched it up. It was easy breezy!"

"I liked the fact that they used a moisturizing cream to protect my hair before doing the procedure, it helped with my hair’s current state and texture. Unlike my previous hair perming experience, this one was definitely easier to style, it required less time since I didn’t have to set them in rollers like before, all I have to do is add some product and then I’m good to go.

The service and the staff was really accommodating as well, they made sure that I was comfortable and they would never fail to update me and walk me through the steps of digital perming."

Digital Perming Plus!, P4500 plus an additional P1000 for longer lengths, Azta Urban Salon SM San Lazaro. See the Salon and Spa Directory for details.
