BEAUTY LAB: COACH POPPY FLOWER

Fragrance reviews are the trickiest if only because matching perfume to a person is a highly subjective experience. Aside from preferences when it comes to scents, factors like lifestyle, personality and body composition are all deciders in the hunt for the ideal fragrance. It is for this reason that we decided to enlist the help of five women, all with different backgrounds and styles to test the new Coach Poppy Flower for us.

Read on to see their diary for a full day of spritizing on the feminine scent and find out how the bottle fits into each of their lifestyles.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

How would you describe yourself?

I would describe myself as a low-maintenance, girl-on-the-go.

What types of fragrances are you usually attracted to?

I veer towards light florals, soapy, powdery, diffused musks, or muted scents.

What was your first impression of Coach Poppy Flower?

I was an instant fan of the packaging! The box exudes a youthful personality with the punchy jewel shade of violet, the silver scribbles and doodle-like font. The bottle was trimmed with the same red-violet and topped with a round, silver cap with ‘Coach’ repeatedly etched in little scrawls, and what I liked the best was the small purple bow that tied together the whole look of it. However, I was a little iffy about the size and shape because although  it was a pretty handy kind of small, the oval bottle was difficult to fit in a clutch or purse; an idea that came to me as I think the scent would best be used during nights out. I prefer light florals during the day, and my first encounter of Poppy was a sharp whiff of Poppy with undertones of citrus.

What comes to mind when you smell the fragrance?

It reminded me of the debutante season when all of my friends were just turning eighteen—all arriving clad in their best formal, girls with their hair in updos, and catching a hint of your friend’s perfume when you lean over to whisper something in her ear, and at the end of the night, all your fragrances that you save for the special occasions come together in a powdery swirl of scents.

A DAY IN THE LIFE WITH COACH POPPY FLOWER

What were your plans for the day?

I woke up unusually early to map out my plans for the day and decide on what to wear (Since I was going to document how my day went!)

I ran some errands and then walked to school. I knew there was an ongoing book sale, so I quickly checked it out before going around school to gather materials I needed for class. I then headed straight to the computer lab to finish a paper before the bell rung for my Theories of Writing class! I finished early so I accomplished other small assignments as well.

I had lunch with some friends and caught up with the latest news about each other at a bazaar in the quad, then went to class again. After my last class, I set out to Xocolat for some snacks and to map out my schedule the day after. Being the chocolate enthusiast that I am, I ordered two desserts all for myself—the Xocolat carrot cake and the Mocha Mi Xu, a creamy mocha rendition of the tiramisu.

After snacks, I wrapped up my day by finishing In Praise of Shadows by Junichiro Tanizaki for my favorite class, ‘The Novel’ before heading home.

What points of the body did you spray Coach Poppy on?

I sprayed it on the pulse points and as my friend told me that fragrances diffuse and waft upward, I daubed some behind my knees as well.

How was the staying power?

Since I did a lot and went around several places, it rubbed off quickly than perfume usually stays on my skin.

Did the scent transition well from day to night?

For me, it was the opposite. The scent was, when I first sprayed it on, strong but then quickly mellowed out.

How many times did you have to reapply the fragrance?

I only needed to reapply it once.

How did the fragrance fare in your life as a student?

As a college student, I find that I don’t have much time to gussy up and fully furnish my face with makeup, so aside from what I’m wearing, the scent is just as important. Since my usual fragrance is more of an eau de cologne, I have to constantly reapply but without being conscious about how much I’ve put on.

While the fragrance was a bit strong, if I were to use it on a daily basis, at least I wouldn’t need to reapply it several times as the scent lasts despite a long day going around a sprawling campus. It also reacts nicely with my body chemistry as it stays longer on my skin, resulting in a more mellow floral.

My final word: Not for the busybody days when you break into sweat running to and from meetings and activities, but should definitely be worn on nights out and when alternating fragrances.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

How would you describe yourself?

Busy, spontaneous and unpredictable.

What types of fragrances are you usually attracted to?

Floral, citrus, you name it! I love any fragrances that give off a flirty vibe.

What was your first impression of Coach Poppy Flower?

When I first saw the graffiti packaging and bottle, I immediately thought it was so 'me'. Overall, it had an edgy and creative look, but was still girly and fun at the same time.

What comes to mind when you smell the fragrance?

It reminds me of Sex and the City. Images of fun and fashionable women wearing it instantly came to mind.

A DAY IN THE LIFE WITH COACH POPPY FLOWER

What were your plans for the day?

I had a blogger's event during the day and knew that we would probably bond over dinner and coffee or milk tea afterwards like we  always do after an event.

What points of the body did you spray it on?

I sprayed it on my neck and then sprayed it in the air and walked through the mist.

How was the staying power of Coach Poppy Flower?

Coach Poppy lasted from noon until midnight. My clothes still smelled like it the day after, too.

Did the scent transition well from day to night?

It transitioned very well from day to night.

How many times did you have to reapply the fragrance?

I only reapplied the fragrance once. I'm a smoker, but I hate the smell of smoke on me, so I always make sure to spray something afterwards and that's what I did with Coach Poppy Flower.

How did spraying on a new fragrance change your outlook?

To me, spraying a new fragrance is like wearing new clothes or shoes. It makes me feel like I'm a whole new person and makes me feel more confident overall. I found that I was much happier during the day despite how tired I was and I couldn't help but show off the fragrance to my fellow bloggers during the event, either. It was like having a new boyfriend that I couldn't wait to show off. Haha.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

How would you describe yourself?

I’m pretty adventurous when it comes to trying out new products. I’m a product junkie in the classic sense—a "Try-Sexual," as Samantha of Sex and the City called it. As much as I can, I try new skin and personal care products, make-up, food you find the grocery, and more. But once I do find one the works for me, I stick to it and continue on with my journey.

What types of fragrances are you usually attracted to?

I am usually attracted to citrusy and floral fragrances because these remind of summer, youthfulness and just enjoying life. They remind me of good times with friends, travelling and then coming home to my family. I also like sensual fragrances because they make me feel sexy, confident and mysterious.

What was your first impression of Coach Poppy?

The packaging is a fun and exciting introduction. Coach used a simple but quirky mix of colors. Estee Lauder had the product name scribbled and dotted the box with small hearts. I found it really cute!

What I find even cuter is the small round bottle with the silver cap and pink bow (a nice touch!).

My first spray of Coach Poppy Flower quickly told me that this was a daytime fragrance. It’s perfect for clear days and an even perfect pick-me-up scent for gloomy days.

What comes to mind when you smell the fragrance?

Surprisingly I could already smell the fragrance even without opening the packaging yet. It smelled cool and I could detect the grapefruit. The scent took me back to 2nd grade, of spending recess in the playground with my friends.

A DAY IN THE LIFE WITH COACH POPPY

What were your plans for the day?

At 9:00am I woke up ready to try out the new Coach Poppy Flower. I was too excited, that I opened the cap and took a small whiff before I hit the shower. I was off to work by 10:00 to face the morning traffic and my packed work schedule. I stayed at my desk for most of the day just to complete my to-do list: writing copy, writing scripts, reading and answering e-mails, brainstorming and discussing deadlines with my workmates. I took time off at noon to celebrate my office mate’s birthday. After initially spraying Coach Poppy in the morning, the fragrance was still there especially on my clothes.

What points of the body did you spray Coach Poppy on?

I sprayed the fragrance on my neck, behind my ears, my décolleté, the insides of my elbows, and some more on my wrists before I stepped out.

How many times did you have to reapply the fragrance?

At 1:00pm, the scent had faded a bit. It disappeared from my wrists, my neck and the inside of my elbows. I sprayed it on for a second time, but just on my neck.

It blended well with my body chemistry. The fragrance floated nicely without being overpowering or distracting. I also appreciated the fact that it didn’t irritate my skin, unlike other fragrances I used before, which made my skin red and itchy. Off to do more work!

Did the scent transition well from day to night?

At 6:00pm I was bushed but Coach Poppy Flower's scent was a nice pick-me-up. I could still smell it and I was off to do some more work. Hay, the life of an agency person.

When I finally clocked out of work at 8:00pm, I noticed that the scent had faded a bit after a few hours. The scent still lingers but spraying it on from time to time will make it last longer. I tend to stick to only one type of perfume from day to night so this is what I would most likely do if I was going out after work.

My overall conclusion though, is that Coach Poppy Flower is an excellent scent for day time! It’s unique, it’s fresh and yes, it indeed lives up to its feminine and romantic personality. For the first time, I have encountered a perfume that could make me picture myself travelling to a different place with just one spray (now I know what those fragrance commercials mean). That’s a true redefinition of a romantic scent.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

How would you describe yourself?

I am warm, ambitious, organized, witty. My tastes lean more towards the classics. I like to do things in my own way and at my own pace. I love being independent.

What types of fragrances are you usually attracted to?

I like fragrances that are subtle, refreshing and powdery. I also prefer scents that I can wear from morning until night. I avoid overwhelming perfumes because they make me dizzy in the afternoons.  I’m attracted to perfumes with notes of freesia, water lily and jasmine.

What was your first impression of Coach Poppy Flower?

I love purple so the packaging was very attractive. The first whiff gave off a fresh floral and fruity character that wasn't overwhelming. I would wear it as more of a day perfume and especially ideal for summer. It also has a faint musky spirit. The bottle cap caught my attention too because of the cute graphics engraved on it and it has a cute pink little ribbon. The bottle is playful and chic. I got the 50ml bottle, which I can easily stash in my bag.

What comes to mind when you smell the fragrance?

The flowery notes are more pronounced than its delicate fruity character. It reminded me of my childhood days, when my sisters and I were picking up fallen yellow bells on the ground in our province and putting them together to make necklace and garland during summer.

A DAY IN THE LIFE WITH COACH POPPY

What were your plans for the day?

I wore the fragrance on a regular workday. It was an eventful day for me. I had a meeting, store visits, and an event in the evening. I had to go out of the office so I thought of wearing it and testing how it smells in hot weather, if it would change, fade or maintain its intensity and personality.

What points of the body did you spray it on?

I sprayed it on my wrist, sides of the neck, and a bit on my clothes.

How was the staying power of Coach Poppy Flower?

It lasted a little into the afternoon and I could still smell it even late at night. Actually, I don’t normally re- apply perfume in the afternoon.

Did the scent transition well from day to night?

The scent was still the same since I sprayed it after showering in the morning, and amazingly, it didn’t turn intoxicating when I went out of the office even though it was really hot.

How many times did you have to reapply the fragrance?

Twice, but reapplied it late in the afternoon and since I also changed clothes for an event.

How did the fragrance compare to the others in your collection?

Coach Poppy Flower perfume has a strong flowery scent and is very feminine. Compared to other fragrances I have which are more of a sweet fruity or clean finish. It’s a stylish, sophisticated scent and really ideal for chic, interesting and playful women of character.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

How would you describe yourself?

I’m a free-spirited and adventurous person. I’m always game to try anything be it food, activities, or products (especially if those things involve fashion or beauty!).

What types of fragrances are you usually attracted to?

I’m usually attracted to fragrances that aren’t too sweet or warm. I gravitate towards fruity or clean-smelling fragrances that are light and never cloying. Everyone in my family has a perfume-sensitive nose so I steer clear from anything that’s too strong.

What was your first impression of Coach Poppy Flower?

When I first saw the box the perfume was housed in, I got excited right away because the box had such a vibrant, girly spirit! Everything about the packaging tied in with the idea of the fragrance: something floral, fruity and youthful.

When I got a whiff of it I knew that I was going to have a bit of fun with this fragrance. With citrus and fruity scents as opening notes, I felt awake and refreshed making it the perfect daytime fragrance or a great midday pick-me-up.

What comes to mind when you smell the fragrance?

Upon first spritz, I immediately thought of the perfect candidate for this fragrance. A girl wearing Coach Poppy Flower definitely has to be girly, but not dainty. Also, this girl has to have a bit of a mischievous side to her, almost like she knows she can get away with anything as long as she’s armed with her charm and this perfume.

A DAY IN THE LIFE WITH COACH POPPY FLOWER

What were your plans for the day?

I spent the whole day in the office, writing and organizing. And at night, I had a lovely Thanksgiving dinner with my family.

What points of the body did you spray it on?

Since the scent goes on quite strong, I only sprayed it in the crook of my arms.

How was the staying power of Coach Poppy Flower?

Very impressive! I sprayed it first thing in the morning and stayed on my skin until mid-afternoon.

Did the scent transition well from day to night?

Yes, it worked for a morning in the office to a dinner with the family.

How many times did you have to reapply the fragrance?

Just once, during mid-afternoon.

What did your boyfriend think of the scent?

Like everyone else in my family, my boyfriend has a strong nose for scents. I saw him in the evening, when the fragrance had evolved into its light, musky base and he immediately noticed that I wasn’t wearing my usual perfume. He liked the departure from the usual clean-smelling scents he’s so used to smelling on me and wouldn’t mind smelling the floral, fruity concoction again!
