DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT: MINAUDIÈRES BY EMI JORGE

The shoe designer's handcrafted bags that were exhibited in Fifth Avenue.

Filipino shoemaker and accessory designer Emi Jorge’s latest artistic endeavor finds her in the United States’ fashion capital, New York, where she represents Pinoy fashion passion and pride with her brand new eponymous line of handcrafted minaudières. Her first collection was presented in a double exhibit in the Philippine Center on Fifth Avenue, alongside the designs of fellow Filipino cordwainer Brian Tenorio.

Crafted out of nomadic inspirations and exotic materials such as oyster shell, black freshwater pearls, and paua shells, Emi’s exquisite creations are the wearable manifestations of her artistic energy and itinerant experiences. Her sojourns to Philippine locales such as Bohol, Donsol, and Banaue and what she sees therein have inspired her arresting pieces. The carabao, for example, the beast of burden that’s a permanent fixture amidst the Philippine landscape, has been fascinatingly paid homage to through Ling Ling-O and Ani, two horn-shaped pieces carefully crafted from dark wood and oyster shell.
