DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT: NIXON MARQUEZ
One of Preview's Ten Designers to Watch this year is Nixon Marquez, a young, soft-spoken lad who has trained under quirky stylist Shahani Gania. Seeing him for the first time with his meek disposition, it was a surprise to see that his work is anything but timid.
His dark, purposely strange and macabre accessories more than just make a statement and transcend being just eye-catching and different. They actually have stories to tell as they were created from a definite concept that emerged from the young designer's notably creative vision.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR INSPIRATION FOR THE SECRET TRIBE.
I was very much inspired by the macabre cruelty and savagery of the Aztec tribe—how they based their fate and dealt with situations by sacrificing human life to honor their gods.
The designs basically signify their occult rituals to execute honorary human sacrifice.
WHAT MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES DID YOU USE?
I used gunmetal chains in various sizes, black leather, crystals, feathers, wires and suede laces, as well as onyx beads, spikes and skull pendants. Everything is handmade so the pieces are specifically tailored according to my inspiration.
TELL US A LITTLE SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR FAVORITE ITEMS IN THIS COLLECTION.
I actually love the whole collection, but three of the pieces I really want to wear all day, everyday are the Dark Ritual Necklace (I think it really epitomizes the tribal concept), Rhythm of Agony Necklace (I like how the combination of onyx beads and safety pins), and the Cruel Heart Ring (usually, crystal represents glamor, but I was able to use it to create a more abstruse accessory).
WHAT CAN WE LOOK FORWARD TO FOR YOUR NEXT COLLECTION?
It really depends on the things that could inspire me, but for sure it'll be as bizarre as this collection.
