TRIAD II: RELUXE

Three jewelry designers show that being eco-conscious can be possible even with jewelry.

By Jae Pickrell

In the spirit of environmental awareness, jewelry designers Kristine Dee, Michelline Syjuco, and Paul Syjuco collaborate to bring us Triad II: Reluxe, a presentation of three separate collections of "upcycled" jewelry crafted from reprocessed precious materials.

This marks the trio's second outing for lifestyle store Firma, and it is their way of going "green." "It was discussed over a cup of coffee and our idea stemmed from current events at that time, like Ondoy, landslides, water problems, etc.," says Kristine. "We wanted to include environmental awareness in our pieces. Then we brainstormed and decided to use recycled materials in our collections, making use of available raw materials, instead of acquiring new ones to create our pieces."

The terms "luxury" and "recyling" don't often go hand in hand, especially when jewelry is involved. But these three designers prove that being luxurious while still being eco-conscious is more than possible. Using their materials and techniques of choice—precious stones and intricate engineering for Kristine, industrial components and weaving for Michelline, and colored stones and traditional goldsmithing techniques for Paul—they each came up with beautifully reworked pieces that bear their individual design aesthetics. And more importantly, the pieces of jewelry stand up to the trio's collective goal: showing that sustainability can be achieved even with the most luxurious of materials.

"This is our commitment to design and how we, as jewelry artists, can contribute to conserving our world’s energy and resources,” say Kristine, Michelline and Paul.
