Blog: Love Chic

What made you try this trend?
As you can see in my blog and Lookbook account, my style has always been on the colorful side! I love putting different hues together so I'm really glad color-blocking is a strong summer trend.

How do you build your outfit around it?
My other favorite look is [going] monochromatic, which is kind of at the other end of [the spectrum] to color-blocking, so I just do the opposite, I see to it that the pieces I wear together are not of the same hue.

How do you style it to make the look your own?
Aside from the fact that I like to dress up in happy colors, I also like comfy clothes. You'll rarely see me dressed to the nines; my style is more street chic than sophisticated, and it shows even when I'm trying out a particular trend.

How do you balance your look to avoid making it look over-the-top?
This may seem weird, but I view color-blocking like music chords! The notes may be different but they belong to the same chord family—the color scheme has to have a similar sense of coherence. Like for this outfit, there's yellow and orange, blue and turquoise.

How do you accessorize the color-blocking trend?
Very minimally, I just wear either a necklace or a couple of bangles.

Can you give tips on how to wear this trend?
The trick is simply to make sure that the colors don't clash. Neon on neon would probably be too much; red and green would be more suitable for a Christmas costume. Work with colors that are flattering on your skin tone. Also, be careful where you wear the brightest color; it should be the area you want to emphasize, like if you're broad-shouldered, wear your skirt maybe in bright orange and your top in light green, and so on.

How would you wear it during the day, night, to the beach, to a party, to work?
At night, I'd wear a color-blocked dress with sexy heels. To the beach, I'd put together a tiny top, maxi skirt and sandals in pastels, plus a necklace and a pretty hair band or hat. To a party, maybe I'd pair a small flowy top with a flirty skirt and pretty wedges. In the office, it would be a blouse, a high-waisted body-con skirt and a cropped blazer paired with pumps. My shoes and bags would be in neutral colors to balance it out.

What made you try this trend?
Color makes me happy, especially yellow, so I decided to give this trend a try but in my own style.

How do you build your outfit around it?
I simply choose colors that complement each other. For this outfit, I chose one base color or one base piece; in this case my red skirt, and then I picked pieces that would go well with it.

How do you style it to make the look your own?
I always include vintage pieces or vintage-inspired pieces. I always love my daily dose of vintage.

How do you balance your look to avoid making it look over-the-top?
Choose colors that complement and not clash each other.

How do you accessorize the color-blocking trend?
Minimal accessories since the colors are a statement as it is.

Can you give tips on how to wear this trend?
Choose colors that complement each other. It doesn't matter how many colors you mix altogether as long as it's not painful to look at.

How would you wear it during the day, night, to the beach, to a party, to work, etc.?
I would wear shorts during the day, trousers at night or to go to work, and mini skirt to a party. My colorful blazer is a staple of course!

Aisa wore a thrifted top and midi skirt, a belt from Ensembles paired with shoes from Asian Vogue and a turban from FlatterBuy.

What made you try this trend?
I've always been a lover of color. It never fails to brighten up your look. Plus, it's much more fun to mix and match different colors. There's so much you can do with this trend, it'll never be boring.

How do you build your outfit around it?

Out of all the neons and brights popping out this season, orange is my number one shade, so I built my look from there. I just had to wear something orange.

How do you style it to make the look your own?
This is such a difficult question because I think anytime you personally put something together; it just comes natural how you make it your own. It's always so hard to dissect your own look. So I guess just by going for what I think looks best with my body and my skin tone, I was able to make it my own.

How do you balance your look to avoid making it look over-the-top?

You just have to know when to stop piling on things. For me, I went for a paler pink blazer to tone the colors down a little bit.

How do you accessorize the color-blocking trend?
I went for colored bracelets, but nothing as bright as my clothes.

Can you give tips on how to wear this trend?
If you're unsure of which colors to mix, stick to the common combos first, two colors at a time. Try pairing any two colors from this group: pink, orange, green, blue, and yellow—all in their strong and bold shades.

How would you wear it during the day, night, to the beach, to a party, to work, etc.?
For day: Something bright and short.
For night: I'll use darker shades of the colors.
For the beach: A cropped top with a flowy maxi skirt.
For a party: Maybe add a few sparkly accessories.
For the workplace: Three-fourths sleeved top with knee-length pencil skirt.

What made you try this trend?
On a daily basis, I'm more of a black-and-white person than a color block person, so I guess it's a matter of trying something new this summer!

How do you build your outfit around it?
I started with my Pill romper, which I used as a top, and just grabbed a pair of green shorts, a basic white sleeveless button down, wedges and a fringe bag for some pop of quirkiness.

How do you style it to make the look your own?
Trick of the trade: hot pink lips and a Yako Reyes fringed clutch, which I haven't used for ages!

How do you balance your look to avoid making it look over-the-top?
I avoided layering too much and just paired it with some comfy wedges.

How do you accessorize the color-blocking trend?
A pair of solid colored bag and/or shoes.

Can you give tips on how to wear this trend?
Don't over accessorize! Stick with solid colored accessories, plus it's the right time to go crazy with your nail polish!

How would you wear it during the day, night, to the beach, to a party, to work, etc.?
For the day, I'd just change my wedges into a pair of neon sneakers. For a night look, I'd wear it with a hot pink structured blazer and a pair of really high white pumps!

What made you try this trend?
In a world outside fashion, I'm a big big fan of color—especially in Art and design. When I first read about the color-blocking trend, I really wanted to try it out because it required mixing together really rich and vibrant colors in everyday looks. I was just a little intimidated because many of my regular go-to pieces are just gray and black. Adding so much color to my outfit was definitely something different for me.

How do you build your outfit around it?
I started with the blue pants, it's been a while since I've had my blue pair of trousers and I really liked it because of its rich hue. Instead of pairing it with a more neutral shade, I paired it with this coral top/tunic instead.

How do you style it to make the look your own?
I just made do with the old pieces I already had. For example, my top, that I tried to pull of as a corset is actually a beach dress. Instead of buying new colorful pieces, I just made do with regular colored clothes I already had.

How do you balance your look to avoid making it look over-the-top?
To balance out the look, I opted for neutral clogs instead of colorful ones. This way I wouldn't look like a walking rainbow.

How do you accessorize the color-blocking trend?
I don't have that many colorful accessories, so I just wore a silver fringed necklace. The fringe added a little more detail to the blocking of colors. And of course, bangles! You can never go wrong with stacks of bangles up your arm!

Can you give tips on how to wear this trend?
When color-blocking, it would be really helpful to think of complementary colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel, or you can go for colors of the same hue. It is a little intimidating because the combination of colors can really be eye-catching. It doesn't really matter what time of the day you wear the look because it easily goes from day to night. That is why it really important to be confident with what you decide to wear.

What made you try this trend?
I'm in love with colors this summer. If you read my blog daily, you can see that I posted an entire article about color-blocking. There was definitely no hesitation [to try] this trend.

How do you build your outfit around it?
I always look at the colors and style of the certain top, bottom or dress. Color is the most important factor because you'll be revolving your outfit around it.

How do you style it to make the look your own?
As usual, I over accessorize or mix it with neons.

How do you balance your look to avoid making it look over-the-top?
I always like it over-the-top.

How do you accessorize the color-blocking trend?
Silver or black accessories since your play of colors in the entire outfit will be your focal point.

Can you give tips on how to wear this trend?
Always match the perfect color combination.

How would you wear it during the day, night, to the beach, to a party, to work, etc.?
For the beach: Probably a pink or red bikini top with a blue bottom.
For a day look: Neon cropped tee with a pair of sky blue shorts with shredded thigh-high stockings.
