What made you want to try this trend?
I grew up listening to grunge and rock n’ roll music and the rough-around-the-edges look of ripped denim is something I’ve always been attracted to, like Erin Wasson and Kate Moss’ style.
How do you build your outfit around it?
For this particular outfit, I juxtaposed the tattered look of these denim pants with a silk top to create an interesting mix of textures.
How do you make the look your own?
I paired this outfit with cat-eye sunnies, an animal print bag and some heels to make it look a bit more polished and age-appropriate instead of grungy.
How do you balance your outfit to avoid making it look over-the-top?
I kept this outfit simple by wearing neutral colors and accessories in order to have only one focal point: the ripped jeans/denim.
How do you accessorize denim?
I find that denim is always more interesting when paired with a bright colored article of clothing or with an interesting print or texture such as leather or fur. Another great look is when you keep everything clean and just add statement jewelry.
Can you give tips on how to wear this trend?
Since denim is a staple in most of our closets, the most important thing is to find the right shade and fit to denim. Don’t be afraid to experiment and pair it with bright or jewel-toned colors or print or add texture like sequins, leather, silk, etc. Since denim is a basic item, you can always dress it up or dress it down.
How would you wear it during the day, night, to the beach, to a party, to work?
For day, I’d like to wear a denim top with a delicate skirt, like a white pleated maxi skirt (still looking for one!) and with boots. At night, I would also wear denim jeans with a leather or sequined jacket and heels. For work, I’d pair jeans with a boyfriend blazer and pair it with loafers or heels.
Show us how you wear it by posting a photo in our brand new My Style section.
